Many of the most popular cabin municipalities charge property tax on holiday homes:

• Ringsaker (Sjusjøen) — around 2 per mille, with a deduction that shields the smallest cabins
• Trysil — about 2 per mille for holiday homes
• Hol (Geilo) — introduced a few years ago, still in force
• Kragerø — can mean significant sums for the most expensive properties along the coast
• Vinje (Rauland) — has property tax, but is known for moderate rates
• Fredrikstad and Hvaler — popular summer municipalities, both with property tax

Municipalities WITHOUT property tax on cabins (2026)

These are becoming rarer — many municipalities need the income for infrastructure and services — but some still hold out:

• Sirdal — a large cabin municipality with no property tax on homes or holiday property (it taxes "works and facilities")
• Sigdal (Eggedal) — has not had property tax on holiday homes

The list changes from year to year, so even if your municipality is exempt today, it is worth checking again each year.

1. Go to the municipality's website and search for "eiendomsskatteseddel" or "sats for eiendomsskatt" (property-tax rate).

3. Look at your own invoice. Property tax is often billed together with municipal charges — water, sewage, and waste — so the total invoice shows you the full ownership cost.
